Director of Music - Position Description

Mission: Resurrection Lutheran Church exists solely for the purpose of bringing men, women and children into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, building them up in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and sending them out as witnesses to Jesus Christ.

Overall Position Description

  1. The Director of Music (DM) helps Resurrection Lutheran Church (RLC) praise and thank God through music.
  2. The DM regularly communicates with the RLC leadership through text, email, and the telephone in addition to face-to-face.
  3. The DM is accountable to the Pastor, Board of Elders, and congregation of RLC.
  4. The purpose of the position of DM is to serve the Lord and the RLC congregation by:
    1. Developing, coordinating, and administering an effective and well-rounded music ministry
    2. Providing leadership to and supervision of all those involved in the music ministry
    3. Serving as primary organist, providing appropriate musical accompaniment during worship services and other church programs

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Worship Planning
    1. Responds to the scriptural and liturgical theme of each service with like-minded hymns, anthems, preludes, postludes and voluntaries.
    2. Recruits and directs the vocal choir and soloists
    3. Trains the vocal choir in:
      1. choral techniques
      2. appreciation of sacred music
      3. participation in worship
    4. Guides the accompanist during rehearsals, worship services and other programs
    5. Supervises the organization and direction of other instrumental ensembles, e.g. brass, wind and stringed instruments, etc. including visiting musicians as appropriate
    6. Prepares appropriate music for weddings, funerals, and special services
    7. Plans and organizes concerts and festivals in coordination with the RLC Pastor and Elders
  2. Scheduling
    1. Identifies and coordinates schedules for:
      1. Vocal choir practices and appearances
      2. Bell choir practices and appearances in conjunction with the handbell director and ringers
      3. Cantors
      4. Organists/pianists playing other music during worship
    2. Provides for substitutes as occasionally needed (e.g. health issues, vacation)
  3. Worship Services
    1. Accompanies congregational singing, serving as primary organist
    2. Supervises any substitute organists and musicians
    3. Directs the vocal choir
  4. Administrative
    1. Recruiting and training
      1. Plans retreats, workshops, and other musical events
      2. Administers the work of volunteers by encouraging teamwork and mutual support, and by providing leadership and nurturing
    2. Resource Management – within the RLC approved budget
      1. Selects and purchases music, worship and music resources, services of outside instrumentalists, musical instruments and equipment
      2. Develops and supervises the maintenance of the music library
      3. Supervises the maintenance of all RLC-owned music materials and instruments, ensuring compliance with licensing and copyright law
      4. Establishes departmental goals and objectives
      5. Manages the use of musical facilities
      6. Plans and presents a yearly budget to RLC Church Council
      7. Evaluates progress regularly
      8. Publishes music program updates in the RLC Newsletter regularly
    3. Coordinates with sound and light technicians as needed, to ensure that musical worship elements are properly heard in the building and via the internet broadcast
  5. Cooperates with RLC Pastor and Elders by performing other duties as requested.
